My grandfather could not read or write, yet in his 71 years of life always had a job and raised my mom and her 2 brothers alone. His work ethic was passed on to my mom and she is now passing the ethics to me and my brother. Most of all they agreed education is key.

My mom. Her struggle, her perseverance, and her support has always given me strength. My mom always stressed the importance of an education. She used to drive 80 miles a day to an upscale suburban elementary school, because she knew the effect that school would have on me. My mom used to tell me that a good education is a building process and in order to stand strong you must have a good strong foundation. She inspires me to never settle for less than I am and to let no obstacles stand in the way of my dreams.

My father was my role model. He is deceased, but he had a great impact on my life. My father was a foster child, went to jail for rape. He was the first man in DC to get DNA testing and was freed and he pushed and pushed until he moved his family out of poverty. He and my mom became foster parents; my mom is still doing it now. Through all of my dad’s troubles, he stayed positive, never angry up until the day he passed. He taught me to keep trying no matter what.

Who is a role model in your life and how have they inspired you?
One of my role models in my life is my mother. She is proof to me that when you try hard in something you want to pursue, you can achieve many things you couldn’t even imagine yourself doing sometimes. She has worked her way from the bottom to the top with so many obstacles, and I admire that effort she has to succeed.

She now holds the title of Assistant City Attorney. She is very smart and has done so much and still has more that she wants to do.

In your own words, what is a dream/dreamer?
A dream is a goal or something that you truly want. A dreamer is someone who thinks of the goal, but can either pursue it or just allow it to stay a dream/idea in his or her head. I’m a dreamer, a believer, conceiver, creator, a doer, and more important, a realizer, someone intent on making dreams a reality. Who is a role model in your life and how have they inspired you?
The biggest inspiration and role model in my life is my mom. I have witnessed my mother go through some of the worst situations and turn them around. I have heard stories of all the people she has helped and all the lives she has saved. I have met many amazing women such as Mae Jameson (first black astronaut), and the recently deceased congresswoman Juanita Millender McDonald (rest-in-peace), but to me, none of these women are like my mother. I truly believe mom is a walking angel who affects any and everyone she comes into contact with.

In your own words, what is a dream/dreamer?
A dreamer is a person who not only looks at the now but looks and sees themselves in the future. A dreamer is one who has a picture of what he wants to become or do. He then uses that picture to create a plan and set goals to make that picture his reality. The Bible says in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision the people perish…”, so it is crucial for one to dream.
Who is a role model in your life and how have they inspired you?
My main inspiration and role model in life would have to be Miss Carol McCullough. Miss McCullough is my English teacher. She has inspired me on so many levels in and out of class. In class she encourages us to always strive for your goals, never get side tracked or allow someone to get between you and your goal. She is also a very influential person to me because she believes that her students can be whoever and whatever they want to be in life. She often tells us, “Never let somebody tell you, you cannot do what you want to do” and “Never feel inferior to anyone.”
