Are You Prediabetic or Insulin Resistant?

Frequently asked by patients

By Roni Deluz ND, RN, Ph.D

Patients frequently ask me: Do I have prediabetes or insulin resistance? Can I cure it?

First, let’s talk about diabetes. The American Diabetes Association has established that a whopping 30 million people have diabetes, a condition where the blood sugar level is higher than normal.  Sadly, this condition is on the rise.

Diabetes Prevention and The Difference Between an Epidemic of “Toxic Sugar Blood” Prediabetes and Insulin Resistance

Prediabetes

Eighty-four million Americans have prediabetes. If people who are prediabetic do not take precautions, they are destined to be diabetic. It is important that people educate themselves about prediabetes, before the body succumbs to the full-blown type 2 diabetes.  Prediabetes can be treated before it becomes type 1 or type 2 diabetes. However, there is the tendency for prediabetes to last for years causing other health problems silently.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar of an individual is high and controlled by oral prescription medicine.  Type 1 diabetes is usually controlled by insulin.

Symptoms of prediabetes share close resemblance to that of the type 2 diabetes. It is, thus, advisable that you get properly tested by expert medical personnel to know which of the conditions you might be suffering from or not. Remember most people will not have, or notice, signs of prediabetes.

High Blood sugar warning signs:

  • Tired and Sleepy mid-day
  • Poor eyesight or blurred vision
  • Frequent urination leading to dehydration
  • Excessive thirst craving sugary drinks
  • Confusion and difficult concentrating

Insulin Resistance

Like prediabetes, insulin resistance is also another dangerous path that leads down the road of diabetes. The name itself has given off the condition as one where the body grows immune to the effects of the hormone insulin, causing blood sugar levels to rise. When you consume food items, the sugar – in the form of glucose – goes into the blood. Insulin is secreted with the primary aim of breaking down this glucose and moving it into the cells where they are used for energy-consuming activities.

When insulin resistance sets in, however, the blood sugar stops responding to the call of this hormone. That means they keep accumulating in the blood rather than moving into the cells. At the end of the day, a high blood sugar level is reported. Around 70 – 80 million people have this condition: WOW (Way Out of Whack).

Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

The interesting thing is that insulin resistance comes with vague symptoms.

  1. Cravings for carbohydrates
  2. Hunger that’s intense in mid afternoon
  3. Nausea
  4. Light headed
  5. Feeling weak
  6. Weight gain and difficult to lose weight

These symptoms occur because the sugar is unable to enter the cells for energy. To that effect, it is recommended that you see your doctor to check your blood sugar levels regularly to ensure you are staying in the safe blood sugar level spectrum.

Across both insulin resistance and prediabetes, here are the most important risk factors:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Sleeping problems
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Age – People over the age of 45 are more prone to both conditions
  • Stress
  • Poor diet with low nutrients
  • Family history

It is wise to change your lifestyle before it surfaces at all.

Can We Prevent Diabetes or Reverse Type 2 Diabetes?

Yes, let’s start here with these simple solutions:

  1. Detox and lose weight. Sugar levels improve just by losing weight.
  2. Exercise 30 minutes daily, 5 days per week. This helps improve your insulin sensitivity, so cells are better able to use the sugar for energy.
  3. Eat the PEVY Diet (Protein-Essential Fatty Acids-Vegetables-Your NUTRIENTS) so you naturally decrease sugar and simple carbohydrates.
  4. Eat more fiber (about 25 grams) so it slows sugar in the system.
  5. Take Nutrient One. This will ensure you get all your nutrients in one smoothie.
  6. Monitor and follow your AIC blood levels by having regular doctor visits.
  7. Increase your water intake. Water flushes your kidneys so that sugar is release from the body into the urine.
  8. Add 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to a glass of water daily. Do not drink apple cider vinegar straight, as it will strip your enamel.

In order to prevent diabetes, you’ll have to make some changes to your lifestyle and you’ll probably need some support. Having prediabetes and/or insulin resistance is the signal before one becomes diabetic. Diabetes can be prevented or cured. Change your life to be healthier happier and ageless.
