10 Simple Tips for Better Heart Health

By Roni Deluz ND, RN, Ph.D.

What is Heart Disease Plain and Simple?

The heart is a pump. It’s a muscular organ about the size of a fist — positioned on the left side of your chest. The heart is divided into the right and the left side. It is divided so that oxygen-rich blood does not mix with oxygen-poor blood. Oxygen-poor blood returns to the heart after circulating through your body. Heart disease can be explained simply as conditions that damage your heart muscle or blood vessels.

Warning Signs of Heart Disease and Stroke

The signs can be described as a fast heartbeat, chest pain, fluid in the legs or feet, shortness of breath, blue or pale skin, weakness, numbness, tightness in chest, lightheadedness, dizziness, fluttering, cold hands and feet, fainting, and so on.  However, even with these symptoms, you might not be diagnosed with heart disease until you’ve actually had a heart attack, stroke, or even heart failure. This is very concerning because the diagnosis is often delayed, and with heart disease, early identification can help lower your chances of a fatal heart attack.

Who Gets Heart Disease?

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S.  Nearly half of all adult Americans have heart disease.  The American Heart Association indicates that 116.4 million, or 46% of U.S. adults, are estimated to have hypertension.

What are the Benefits of Juicing and Which Juices are Heart-healthy?

There are a variety of different juice combinations that can protect against heart disease and a variety of other health issues. The FDA and the National Cancer Institute suggest one thing to keep yourself healthy: eat more fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible for the everyday person to consume the recommended four to five servings per day. However, the best way to consume those servings and more is through juices. Now, juicing doesn’t mean you can just go to the supermarket and pick up some Ocean Spray.  No, you need to consume fresh juices, and the best way to do that is to make them yourself. Processed juices have been stripped of many of their nutrients. Juices that are bottled, canned, refrigerated, or frozen are less effective in their healing and cleansing properties. The Preventative Medicine Research found in 2005 that eight ounces of pomegranate juice a day could stop coronary heart disease in its tracks. In fact, within only three months, the study showed that the effects of coronary heart disease were reversing. Additionally, UCLA conducted a study that also showed pomegranate juice slowed the progression of cancer and heart disease.

What about Fruit Juices for the Heart?

Vegetable juices are not only healthy, but they also have fewer calories and less sugar than fruit. You also receive much more nutrition from vegetable juices. There are several heart-healthy vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, collard greens, and cabbage that have powerful antioxidants that are good for reducing the risk of heart disease. Carrot juice is another good option that provides several benefits, including better vision, protection against heart disease, and protection against cancer.

RECIPE:  Heart-healthy Spicy Juice

1 cup spinach
½ cup of cut-up broccoli
¼ cup of beets
Pea size piece of garlic
½ lemon, lime, or ginger
1 cucumber
A sprinkle of cayenne

Can I drink juice if I am on medications for my heart?  If you currently have a heart condition and you’re taking medication, such as Lipitor, it’s important that you be careful about some of your juice ingredients. For example, grapefruit juice may interfere with the absorption of your medication. What happens is that the grapefruit juice causes the medication to enter your bloodstream too quickly, which is equivalent to taking a higher dose of the medication rather than it slowly absorbing over time.
