Scarves: An Essential Part of a Man’s Wardrobe

Multiple ways to rock a scarf

By Aonika Laurent Thomas

It’s a rite of passage for most men isn’t it? The day a boy has to go to a wedding, funeral, christening, or bar mitzvah, and his dad teaches him how to tie a tie. Dad shows him how to tie a windsor, half windsor, cigarette knot, etc., and Dad thinks his job is done when it comes to neckwear. However, he left you hanging. Dad never showed you how to wear a scarf. A scarf isn’t just to keep you warm. It’s bling for your neck: a way to make a statement about who you are in the world or what mood you’re in that particular day. Are you feeling cosmopolitan or utilitarian? Do you want to evoke a bygone era or be the model of modernity? Let’s explore the different ways you can make this accessory a fashion weapon you can deploy with aplomb.

The Parisian Knot

Have you ever been to France? No? Neither have most people. That doesn’t mean you can’t look as if you just got back from strolling the Champs D’Elysee. Fold the scarf in half and drape it around your neck. Then bring the loose end through the loop and tighten to your level of comfort. This is particularly helpful for longer scarves.

The Ascot Knot

“Pardon me, would have any Grey Poupon?” This look evokes the high-end image of a proper Englishman, but the knot itself is actually quite simple. Hang the scarf around your neck, letting it hang equally long on both sides. Take the ends of the scarf and tie them under and over each other like you’re tying your shoes. Then bring one end up under the knot and let it hang in the front. You can wear this tight or loose depending on your outfit, and it’s versatile enough to wear with a formal look or a casual afternoon out fishing on a cool day.

The Once Around

This is the look to make it seem as if you just grabbed the scarf and threw it around your neck on the way out the door because you were too cool and self-actualized to bother with vanity. Of course, it is calculated. Take the scarf and hang it on your neck with one side hanging roughly twice as long as the other (like that calculation?). Bring the long side up and wrap it around your neck and let it hang in front. The Once Around is for the modern man on the go and looks good tucked inside your coat or hanging out in front.

The Reverse Drape

Picture yourself driving along the coastline in a convertible, top down. Envision Snoopy sitting on top of that doghouse as the Flying Ace. What’s more dashing than that scarf blowing in the wind behind you? The Reverse Drape achieves the desired effect. Position the scarf evenly around your neck and take the left side and toss it over your left shoulder, the right side and toss it over your right shoulder, leaving both ends hanging down your back. Hit the slopes with this look and them all wondering who that mystery man is.
