What to Wear When You Want to Get Noticed… For the Right Reasons

By: Amanda Garrigus

Your clothes say a lot about you, so choose them wisely. If you do, you’ll stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons. If, on the other hand, you wear clothes that don’t suit you just because they’re, say, trendy, you’ll wind up grabbing people’s attention for all the wrong ones. Buying something you’re uncomfortable wearing just because you saw that guy in the Drake video sporting it, could leave you in the unenviable position of looking like your clothes are wearing you. That’s a big fashion no no. Now, that’s not to say you shouldn’t reach outside your comfort zone, just be sure you’re reaching for something you love, and that you can pull off. See below for a few more tips on how to dress to impress.

  1. Make sure your clothes fit. There’s nothing worse than an ill fitting suit, except maybe an ill fitting, well, anything really. If you think buying clothes that are a size too big will hide the fact that you’ve missed a few sessions at the gym, think again. You’re not fooling anyone. Instead, you’ll leave people with the impression that you lack confidence in yourself. Always opt for good fit, and when in doubt, take it to a tailor.

  1. Don’t be afraid of color. Did you know that pink used to be a color favored more by men than women? A man who knows how to up his wardrobe game by infusing a pop of color, is a man who deserves our attention.

  1. Keep your shoes on point. The state of your shoes will speak volumes about your attention to detail. If that sounds judgy, it’s because it is. Better you hear it from us than from your boss. Keep the leather polished and if the soles are worn paper thin, or worse, are coming unglued, take them to a shoe repair shop and get it sorted. New shoe life, new pep in your step.

  1. Accessorize within reason. If you love a pocket square and can wear one with the confidence of Double-O-Seven, then by all means, please do. But if you don’t know a pocket square from a square of chocolate, then maybe take a pass. The same goes for blingy watches and jewelry. If it’s your thing, then have at it, but if you feel like you’re trying too hard with your jewelry, you probably are. Point is, you want your accessories to be a reflection of who you are, maybe who you hope to be, but definitely not someone you don’t recognize.

  1. Invest in a few good belts. Nothing kills a polished look faster than wearing that beat up belt you’ve had since college. If you’ve invested in a great suit, respect yourself, and that suit, enough to tie it all together with a spit and polished cincture.

  1. Totally agree with all these.

    I would add….
… when greeting someone, give a firm handshake and look in the eye when doing so. …
This shows and brings out the confidence in you.

  2. Hi Steve. I watch your show quite often (Family Feud) late at night before going to sleep instead of watching the depressing news. And every now and then when scrolling my phone I come across your talk show which happened today. The episode about the young man who walked 20 miles to go to his job touched my heart. “Young men of integrity” is what we should strive for the future of our generation. I was so moved that I wanted right then and there to start a mentoring program for youth. So, I went to your web site and there it is you too have one. I feel that I have been given a lot and giving back should be the way to go. What advice do you have for me? Any suggestions? How can I be sustainable? I have a LinkedIn profile under my name: Dr marlene Trusiak, check for authenticity. Any one else with positive inputs are welcome. Have a great weekend all.

  3. Hi Steve Harvey I am a big fan of yours it specially when it comes down to dressing but I really haven’t had to dress like I want to because of my mom she is 78 years old and helping her out but I wanted to know if you could look out for me on some dressing tips
