The Silent Epidemic: Diabetes

Diabetes has been named as the most challenging health problem in this country.

By Roni Deluz ND, RN, Ph.D.

Diabetes has been named as the most challenging health problem in this country. It mainly occurs because of insulin imbalance in the body. Insulin imbalance means the body cannot successfully use the insulin that is already present in our body, or in other cases the body itself is unable to make enough insulin to use the sugar we eat. We do not truly understand why Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases worldwide.

A Silent Epidemic

According to the WHO (World health organization), over 422 million people globally had Diabetes in 2014, but in 1980 only 108 million had it. The most shocking statistic is that around 1.6 million deaths were caused by Diabetes in 2016. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death according to the Centers for Disease Control. Diabetes is a growing epidemic of the 21st century, and it is worth discussing again and again.  Around 2/3 of U.S adults are obese or overweight, and they are at serious risk of facing Diabetes at any point of life.

Diabetes has become more complicated

There are now 5 different clusters that fall under the 2 Types of Diabetes.

Type I – Childhood Onset or Juvenile Diabetes related to Insulin deficiency. The pancreas does not create enough insulin in Type 1. Common signs and symptoms are: Drowsiness/fatigue, frequent urination, blurred vision, increased appetite, repeated infections, dry mouth, slower healing wounds, rapid weight loss, and more.

Type II- Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM)– The body’s cells no longer react to insulin. Being overweight increases a person’s chances in developing Type 2. Common signs and symptoms are: Low nutrient diet, lack of physical activity, aging, obesity, poor food choices, dehydrated state, edema in lower extremities, abdominal fat, and more.

There are 5 clusters of Diabetes under type 1 and type 2 and researchers now say there are really 5 different types of Diabetes called “Cluster types”.

  1. Severe Autoimmune Diabetes
  2. Severe Insulin-Deficient Diabetes
  3. Severe Insulin-Resistant Diabetes
  4. Mild Obesity-Related Diabetes
  5. Mild Age-Related Diabetes

Why I am outraged about this?

There is a huge misunderstanding that Diabetes is only a problem of overweight persons. This assumption makes people feel like it’s their fault that they have Diabetes. It is not emphasized enough that Diabetes has many components; malnutrition, chronic toxicity, metal toxicity, genetic components, and an economic component. Diabetes is mostly preventable, through education, prevention. and action.  It is outrageous that the number of people diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes is rising, world-wide. I lost people in my family due to Diabetes and we all know someone with it. Why aren’t we doing more?  I decided to start a free Walk and Talk Coaching program for my clients after a family member died from Type 1. Can we do more? (Stay tuned for our next Diabetes article on what you can do to help.)

Spread this urgent message: Most Diabetes is reversible and preventable!

The word is out that Diabetes is progressive and it’s a chronic illness making us believe that there is no cure and it will get worse. If it is a disease due to over consumption of sugar and carbs then doesn’t it make sense to decrease or avoid them? If malnutrition contributes to Diabetes doesn’t it make sense to increase our nutrients? If weight gain contributes to complications of Diabetes, then doesn’t it make sense to fast or do a detox to lose weight?

  1. I reversed my diabetes thru a whole food plant based low fat diet. Check out Dr Barnard or Dr McDougall

  2. Diet not to lose weight by following all these quick weight loss programs but look into the food that cultures that have little diabetes, heart troubles etc. Exercise is a daily must, if only 15 minutes, it beats nothing. I lost 40 lbs in the last year & this isn’t the 1st time in 15 years but it’ll be the last b/c I follow a regiment and I give myself cheat meals not cheat days.
Lastly, I meditate in prayer daily for moments to hours according to what’s on my schedule. God gave you His image, do you think that He gave you a weak & sick one, think about it. Bless you.

  3. As a naturopathic and chiropractic physician, master herbalist, clinical nutritionist and formulation chemist, I appreciate the advice being given on Mr. Harvey’s website.
Since 1971, I have consulted people with diabetes. As a formulation chemist, I have created nutraceutical and botanical products that slow down, stop and reverse diabetes. In addition to the stated advise, I would suggest to always seek the cause. Once discovered and reversed diabetes can be cured, even Type I.
Type I is usually caused by a toxic body with a suppressed immune system. This will allow the proliferation of one or more pathogens to manifest in the pancreas. Many people that develop Type I diabetes state it happened after an infection similar to the flu. It is not difficult to detoxify the body, including one’s thoughts and emotions, and then modulate the immune system. NAD therapy along with ozone infusion work wonderfully. Dr. James Chappell
