The Classic White Shirt for All Ages

Button-up timeless style

by Aonika Laurent Thomas

One staple that’s found in every stylish woman’s closet is the classic white button-down. Women for decades have captured our attention wearing the classic white shirt from Dorothy Dandridge and Marilyn Monroe to Princess Diana and Her Royal Highness Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. This timeless traditional piece is a must, and here is how to wear it at every age.

In your 20s

Hit the beach in an oversized classic white button-down as a cover-up. It’s perfect for its deceptive simplicity. Cuffed sleeves, tied, or loose, it elevates your beach look. A bright bikini underneath creates a look that’s effortless and fun.

In your 30s

You’re on your way. Give the illusion that you’ve made it. The classic white button down is flawless paired with dark cropped skinny jeans, sleek heels, and a statement belt or bag. Have a meeting? Add a sleek blazer and, voilà, polished perfection.

In your 40s

Tuck your white button-down shirt into an ultra-high-waist pencil skirt. Finish with a belt and a pair of pointy-toe heels. Not into skirts? No problem. You can achieve the same elevated look with ultra-high-waist, flair-leg trousers. This look is perfect for work. Bonus: You won’t look like the boring human resource director, even if you are.

In your 50s

Your classic crisp white button-down shirt is the perfect compliment to an accordion-pleated midi skirt for a chic brunch or a sweeping maxi for an evening out.

In your 60s

You figured out by now that tailoring is everything and minimalist styling is key. This is why your crisp white button-down along with a tailored pair of black trousers, black flats, and a string of pearls are a staple.

  1. Thanks for the fashion tip. Now I now know I can never have to many white shirts. I wanted to stop buying them. But now I will continue to but them in different styles.

  2. Hello! My name is Cynthia Carter and I wanted to let you know that the white blouse is beautiful on women. My question is, can you wear the blouse in the winter as well?

  3. Cynthia Carter, yes you can wear the blouse in the winter. A crisp white blouse will never go out of style. They are like a good pair of black pants, med height pump, classic well made coat…etc. A few good classic basics, with some accessories that can work with more than one outfit, a couple of more trendy pieces and you are good to go.
