Stop Getting Sick

Your Immune System is Everything

By Roni Deluz ND, RN, Ph.D

Your immune system is your body’s military, sworn to defend against all who threaten it, both foreign and domestic. It has some interesting soldiers that help make this possible. A healthy immune system protects you against any disease or infection. It is made up of cellular systems that work together to save our lives. An important part of the immune system is the Lymphatic System, which houses the lymph nodes and vessels. Next is bone marrow, which produces white blood cells; the spleen, which filters the blood; and the thymus, where the T cells work to destroy cancer cells. One thing for sure, the immune system is very complex, and it took the AIDS epidemic to encourage scientists to take a closer look.

“My immune system crashed over 25 years ago, and I woke up one day near death’s door”

Why Did My Immune System Crash?

Low Immune System could be due to many things that the body is not able to cope with because it is not in homeostasis, or balance. I was a young nurse working double shifts, eating poorly, not drinking clean water, under extreme stress, allergic to almost everything on the planet, sleep deprived, and my diet consisted of no real nutrition. I was a recipe for a crashed immune system. Avoid these to keep a healthy immune system:

Prolonged stress
Not enough exercise
Lack of sleep
Improper nutrition

How Do I Know If My Immune System Needs Help?

Without a shadow of a doubt, you will know something is wrong with your immune system if you have many of the symptoms below. Most likely, you have had some of these and have been ignoring them for a long time. That’s what I did because I was strong and a health practitioner who thought she would be OK.

  • Cold hands
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Rashes
  • Patchy hair loss
  • Repeated infections
  • Colds and flus
  • Body odor, despite cleanliness
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Tingling or numbness of your body parts
  • Unexpected weight change
  • Swelling of lower extremities
  • Yellowing of your skin or eyes

You need to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables if you want to start building a healthier immune system. Even simply incorporating a daily green juice to your meal plan could work wonders. You should exercise regularly and try to avoid coming into contact with germs and infections as much as possible. Make sure to wash your hands frequently and cook meats thoroughly. Also, try to avoid smoking and drinking as much as possible.

Below I have identified foods to help you build a strong immune system.  You’ll also find a few simple recipes for juices and a smoothie – that you can make at home – that will boost your immune system.  Make sure to avoid certain foods for a healthier immune system.
