5 Fan Favorites You Forgot Hosted ‘Showtime at the Apollo’

Do you remember all of these hosts?

Steve had such a long, successful run as the “Showtime at the Apollo” host that you might have forgotten that other people held the position over the years. You probably remember Mo’Nique as host, but did you know about these other five famous faces who once had emcee duties on the show?

1. Rick Aviles: This name isn’t ringing any bells? If you’ve seen “Ghost” and “Carlito’s Way”, you’ve seen Rick Aviles. The late actor and comedian hosted for several years, from the earliest days in 1987 to 1991.

2. Martin Lawrence: The comedian is well-known for his standup routines, movie roles and television show, “Martin”, but he took time out of his busy schedule to do one guest host spot in 1989.

3. Sinbad: From the early years of “Apollo”, this popular comedian hosted the show from 1989 to 1991. He provided a lot of laughs and entertainment of his own, as the best hosts are known to do.

4. Mark Curry: Another comedian famous for his standup bits, Mark Curry did one guest host stint in 1993. One-off hosts became a regular part of the “Apollo” lineup, and it kept things fresh and interesting with each new face who came on.

5. Whoopi Goldberg: Before she settled onto “The View”, Whoopi did a guest host spot back in 2006. For anyone who’s unfamiliar with Whoopi’s early career, she started out on stage doing standup, well before she landed film roles.

While Steve and Mo’Nique held some of the longer hosting duties, other hosts like Sinbad and Rick Aviles held it down for a few years between them. The show made good use of guest hosts, however, with Christopher “Kid” Reid and Anthony Anderson also making appearances.

Of all the hosts who took on the role at “Showtime at the Apollo”, who was your favorite?
