Summer Style Guide

The Pieces You Need Right Now

By Amanda Garrigus

It’s officially summer! How about we celebrate with a little shopping? A girl can never have too many flirty summer dresses, or sandals for that matter. For summer 2019 we want to step up our game and lean into some of the more compelling trends making waves from sea to shining sea.

First up? The white dress. She’s still the reigning queen of summer and there are no signs she’ll be dethroned any time soon. Whether you’re exploring a foreign city, entertaining at a beach house or heading to work, there’s a white summer dress to suit your needs. This maxi dress from Zara feels like pajamas, but looks chic enough for greeting lunch guests at the door.

If you prefer a higher hemline (and really, who doesn’t?), then this little confection from Pixie Market will do very nicely. It checks all the right boxes with its figure-flattering, cinched waist and thigh-grazing scalloped hem.

They’re not just for babies anymore. This summer, the bucket hat has surged in popularity for the over 2-year-old set, so you may as well give in a scoop one of your very own. The good news is they are comfortable, easy to pack, and, unlike summer’s other fave, the straw hat, they tend to be super affordable. This one from Madewell fits the bill.

Of course, you could kill two birds with one stone and get yourself a straw bucket hat, like this breezy option from Nordstrom.

While we’re loathe to give up our skinny jeans, ever, sometimes the hot summer sun demands a more relaxed option. Trending right now are pants that give your legs a little wiggle room so you can stay cool, and chic. H&M’s paper-bag pants will work as nicely on safari in the Serengeti as in the urban jungle on your way to the office.

We’ve been spotting a lot of flowy palazzo pants too, and we want some. Mango gets it right with these simple and sophisticated trousers.

Some are calling it the summer sweater, others simply the knit tank, we’re just calling it fab. Upgrade your basic summer tank top with this sophisticated, super flattering new summer staple. Don’t sleep on this one from ASOS in yellow, summer’s hottest color.

Two is better than one. Scoop another from J. Crew in a versatile neutral.

Now for the sandals. This summer, make them a platform like these from Nasty Gal or keep things light and airy like these slides from Urban Outfitters.

Both are on trend, and both will work nicely when paired with any of the above.

Finally, put an anklet on it. This 90s throwback has surged in popularity, this summer with beads and shells taking center stage. Top Shop’s shell chain anklet hits the mark.

Happy shopping! Leave me a note with your summer finds.  Shop the look below.
