The Real Reason I Started the Steve & Majorie Harvey Foundation Mentoring Camp
This Is Bigger Than Comedy — It’s About Saving Young Men
A lot of people ask me why I started the Mentoring Camp… truth is, it came from a real place of pain, reflection, and purpose.
I was sittin’ at my daddy’s funeral one day — 43 years old — lookin’ at that man layin’ there, and it hit me: “Without him, I wouldn’t have made it.” Everything I learned about work ethic, discipline, manhood — all of it came from him.
And I started thinkin’, “What happens to the little boys who don’t have that?”
What happens to the ones who don’t got a father showin’ them how to tie a tie, shake a man’s hand, keep their word, or push through when life gets hard?
See, there’s a lot of single mothers out here raisin’ boys — doin’ the best they can — but that’s a hard job. You can love that child with everything you got, but it takes a man to show a boy what bein’ a man really looks like.
That’s when it hit me — I gotta step in.
I gotta help fill that gap.
So I started speakin’ at schools, juvenile centers, wherever I could. I met young brothers who told me years later that one talk changed their life. That’s when I knew God was usin’ me for somethin’ bigger than jokes and TV shows.
The Mentoring Camp became my way of payin’ forward what my father gave me — structure, guidance, love, and accountability.
It’s about teachin’ young men who they are, and whose they are.
If you’ve ever wondered why I do what I do — it’s because I believe every young man deserves a chance to become who God created him to be.

My name is Terryl Humphrey and I grew up in a single parent household with a mama who raised three boys by herself. There is a program in Little Rock, Arkansas called OK Program and it was a program with black men mentoring young black men to become great men. The impact that you are leaving is incredible because you are the mentor for young men to become great men in life. Thank you for leading by example and being the difference that young men and women can follow.
Bless you Steve!
