The Springtime Table
Simple Floral Arrangements Set the Stage
By Amanda Garrigus
Setting the mood for a perfect springtime meal can be as simple as filling your table with spring-ready floral arrangements. A few simple bouquets, easily accomplished, with the right combination of flowers and a small investment of time, can make the difference between a decidedly mundane shared meal and a buzz-worthy gathering. Pretty pastels, perfectly placed, will set the stage for an afternoon lunch to remember, or a dinner that conjures all the best that this time of year has to offer. Sure, the guests and the food matter, but it’s that first impression of the table that will set the mood. The flowers are in bloom! Go ahead and invite them to the table! We’ve taken inspiration from some of our favorite florists, from New York to Los Angeles, then distilled each so that you can recreate the magic at home. Read on for a few different takes on the spring bouquet.
Keep It Sparse
You don’t have to stuff a vase to bursting or build a tower of blossoms several feet high to create a strong impression. In fact, it’s often best to keep your floral arrangements tidy and low. Nothing kills a conversation faster than a bouquet that’s so dense and skyscraper-high that you can’t see the person seated across from you. Kristen Caissie of Moon Canyon strikes the perfect high/low balance with this earthy and airy arrangement.
Boost the cred of your floral arrangement by adding a few unexpected details, like ripe fruits and rich greenery. A well-placed kumquat or a few small lemons can add life and vibrancy to an otherwise basic bunch. This tablescape by Annie Campbell for Jenni Kayne, stars brightly-colored poppies and those aforementioned kumquats. Just the thing to get your creative juices flowing.
Stay In Season
While it might be tempting to grab a bunch of roses and call it a day, you’ll have better luck bringing spring to your table if you stick to flowers that bloom but once a year. We’re talking about the peony. This flower is the undisputed queen of spring and if you can get your hands on a few bunches, don’t hesitate. They come in an array of gorgeous colors and their fragrance is subtle but irresistible. New York’s Putnam & Putnam takes the pretty peony to the next level with this decadent and delicious arrangement.
